Measurement defined

process of experimentally obtaining information about the magnitude of
a quantity.

NOTES

  1. Measurement implies a measurement procedure, based on a theoretical model.
  2. In practice, measurement presupposes a calibrated measuring system, possibly subsequently verified.

What is metrology?

of science or technology they occur. Metrology, along with of science or technology they occur. Metrology, along with assessment and standardization,  is one of the three pillars of sustainable development infrastructure of a country (More info on ISO publication on the three pillars - PDF,96KB).

A growing need for reliable measurement results

Measurements play a key role in modern life - in industry as well as in trade and in society in general, in assuring quality and safety in assigning costs. In addition, there is a growing need in science and technology for increasingly accurate and more complex measurements.
In Ethiopia, the Government has authorized QSAE as the custodian of the National standards for the base (length, mass, temperature, etc) and some derived measurement quantities of the SI system.
The National Metrology Laboratory responsibility is to meet the needs of industry and society for traceable measurements (e.g. traceable calibration service) and to provide close access to measurement technology competence.

Sl (Systeme International)

SI is a coherent system of units defined through international consensus. Whenever possible, the definitions are based on established laws of nature, and the units can be realized and maintained through primary standards constructed according to well defined procedure.
Seven SI base units, name & symbol:
(1) Length, metre & m; (2) Mass, kilogram & kg; (3) Time, second & S;
4) Electric current, ampere & A; (5) Thermodynamic temperature, kelvin & K; (6) Amount of substance, mole & mol; & (7) Luminous intensity, candela & cd.

Calibration defined

definition (a)
operation establishing the relation between quantity values provided by measurement standards and the corresponding indications of a measuring system, carried out under specified conditions and including evaluation of measurement uncertainty.

definition (b)
operation that establishes the relation, obtained by reference to one or more measurement standards, that exists under specified conditions, between the indication of a measuring system and the measurement result that would be obtained using the measuring system.

Calibration service

One of the pillars of a standardization infrastructure is the metrological system in place at a national level.

Typical measurement areas in which calibration is done are:

Dimensional measurement
Mass measurement
Volume measurement
Density measurement
Pressure measurement
Force measurement
Temperature measurement
Electrical measurement
Frequency measurement
